Vajrasana (Thunderbolt or Diamond Pose)

Vajrasana is a seated yoga asana that is also known as the thunderbolt pose or diamond pose. It is a simple kneeling posture that involves sitting on the heels with the legs and feet placed together, and the palms resting on the knees or thighs. This asana is commonly used for pranayama and meditation practices, as well as a warm-up pose for other seated postures.



How To Perform Vajrasana (Thunderbolt or Diamond Pose)


  1. Kneel down on the floor with your thighs perpendicular to the ground and your feet together.

  2. Sit back on your heels and make sure that your big toes touch each other and your heels are slightly apart.

  3. Place your hands on your knees with palms facing down and fingers pointing towards the knees.

  4. Keep your head straight, spine erect, and shoulders relaxed.

  5. Take deep breaths and hold the pose for as long as comfortable.



Modifications

  • Use a cushion or blanket to sit on if experiencing discomfort or pain in the knees, ankles or feet.

  • Use a chair or a wall for support if unable to sit upright on the floor.

  • People with high blood pressure or heart problems should avoid this pose or perform it with caution.


Chakras

This pose stimulates the Muladhara chakra, located at the base of the spine, which is associated with stability, grounding and a sense of security.



Doshas

Vajrasana balances all three doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

It can help pacify Vata dosha by promoting grounding and stability, Pitta dosha by reducing excess heat and acidity in the body and Kapha dosha by promoting digestion and reducing lethargy.
