Surya Bhedana Pranayama is a type of yogic breathing technique that involves inhaling through the right nostril while blocking the left nostril with the thumb, followed by a long exhale through the left nostril while blocking the right nostril with the ring finger. This technique is said to activate the sympathetic nervous system, which is associated with the "fight or flight" response, and increase heat in the body.
Surya Bhedana Pranayama is one of the two main forms of nadi shodhana pranayama, the other being chandra bhedana pranayama. The practice is typically done in the morning and is considered to be energizing and purifying.
How To Practice Surya Bedha Pranayama
It is important to note that pranayama should only be practiced under the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher, as incorrect practice or overexertion can lead to negative effects on the body and mind.
Sit comfortably in a meditative posture with the spine straight and shoulders relaxed.
Place the right hand in Vishnu mudra (fold the index and middle finger towards the palm, while keeping the other fingers extended) and bring it up to the right nostril.
Using the thumb, close the left nostril and inhale deeply through the right nostril.
Hold the breath for a few seconds.
Then, close the right nostril with the thumb and exhale slowly and completely through the left nostril.
