Marichyasana C (Sage Twist Pose C)

Updated: Apr 10, 2023

Marichyasana C, also known as Sage Twist Pose C, is a seated yoga asana that involves twisting the torso while keeping the legs in a bound position. This pose is named after the sage Marichi from Hindu mythology. It is a more advanced variation of Marichyasana A and Marichyasana B, and requires a certain level of flexibility and strength to perform correctly. The pose is often used in yoga sequences to improve digestion, stimulate the internal organs, and promote overall spinal health.

How to perform Marichyasana C (Sage Twist Pose C)

  1. Start by sitting on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you.

  2. Bend your right knee and bring the heel close to your right hip. Keep the left leg straight.

  3. Place your right hand behind your back, close to your spine, with your fingers pointing towards your left hip.

  4. Inhale and raise your left arm up towards the ceiling.

  5. Exhale and twist your torso towards the right, bringing your left elbow to the outside of your right knee.

  6. Keep your left arm straight and push it against your right knee to deepen the twist.

  7. Take a few deep breaths while holding the pose.

  8. Release the twist and repeat on the other side.

Note: As with any yoga pose, it is important to perform Marichyasana C with proper alignment and under the guidance of a qualified teacher.

Modifications

  • If you are having difficulty reaching the hand around the back, you can use a strap to bind the hands together. Hold the strap in both hands and use it to draw your shoulders back and down.

  • If your bottom knee is uncomfortable, you can place a folded blanket or bolster underneath it to provide support.

  • If you find it difficult to keep your spine straight, you can sit on a block or bolster to help lift your hips and lengthen your spine.

  • If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in your neck, you can keep your gaze straight ahead instead of turning your head to look over your shoulder.

Remember to always listen to your body and modify the pose as needed to avoid any pain or discomfort.

At the same time, the grounding nature of the pose can help to reduce excess Kapha, which is associated with feelings of lethargy and heaviness. The pose can also help to calm the mind and reduce stress, which can be beneficial for all dosha types.

Chakra

Marichyasana C can stimulate the Manipura (solar plexus) chakra.

History of Marichyasana C (Sage Twist Pose C)

Marichyasana C, also known as Marichyasana III or Sage Twist C, is a seated twisting yoga posture that is part of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series. It is named after the sage Marichi, who is said to have been the son of Brahma, the creator god in Hinduism. The name "Marichyasana" is derived from the Sanskrit words "marichi" which means ray of light or ray of the sun, and "asana" which means pose.

The origins of Marichyasana C are not well-documented, but it is believed to have been developed over thousands of years by Indian yogis and sages who sought to improve physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual connection through the practice of yoga. Today, Marichyasana C is practiced by yoga practitioners around the world as a way to cultivate strength, flexibility, and balance in the body and mind.
