Marichyasana is a group of four poses (A, B, D & C) where Marichyasana A is a seated twisting yoga posture named after the sage Marichi from Hindu mythology. The posture is part of the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga and is also practiced in other styles of yoga. In Hatha yoga mostly the A & C versions are used.
How To Perform Marichyasana A (Sage Twist Pose A)?
Start by sitting on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Place your hands on the ground beside your hips.
Bend your right knee and place your foot flat on the floor. Keep your left leg straight and press it firmly into the ground.
Inhale and lift your left arm up towards the ceiling.
Exhale and twist your torso to the right, bringing your left elbow to the outside of your right knee.
Bring your right hand behind you and place it on the ground behind your back.
Hold the pose for several breaths, deepening the twist with each exhale.
To release, inhale and come back to center. Straighten your right leg and repeat on the other side.
To deepen the pose, you can reach your right arm up and over your head, bringing your palm to rest on the floor behind your back.
Alternatively, you can also clasp your hands behind your back while in the twist.
Remember to keep your spine long and your chest lifted throughout the pose, and to avoid rounding your back.
Modifications
If you find it difficult to wrap your arm around your knee, you can hold onto your shin instead.
If you have tight hips or lower back, you can place a blanket or a block under your sitting bones for support.
If you are unable to reach your foot with your opposite hand, you can use a strap to hold onto your foot.
If you have neck or shoulder issues, you can keep your gaze forward instead of twisting your head to look over your shoulder.
If you have knee pain, you can place a folded blanket or a block under your knee to support it.
Remember to listen to your body and only go as deep into the pose as feels comfortable for you.

Chakras
Marichyasana A (Sage Twist Pose A) is said to stimulate and balance the Manipura chakra, also known as the Solar Plexus chakra. This chakra is located in the abdominal region and is associated with personal power, willpower, self-confidence, and self-esteem. When the Manipura chakra is balanced, one may experience feelings of inner strength, courage, and confidence.
Additionally, Marichyasana A can also activate the Muladhara chakra (Root chakra) and Swadhisthana chakra (Sacral chakra), which are located at the base of the spine and in the lower abdomen, respectively.
These chakras are associated with grounding, stability, creativity, and sensuality. When these chakras are balanced, one may experience a sense of inner stability, creativity, and a healthy expression of emotions.
Doshas
Marichyasana A can help balance all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) in the body. The twisting motion of the pose can help stimulate the digestive fire, or Agni, which can aid in digestion and elimination, benefiting both Pitta and Kapha. The grounding and stabilizing aspects of the pose can help to calm and balance Vata.
History of Marichyasana A (Sage Twist Pose A)?
Marichyasana A (Sage Twist Pose A) is named after the great sage Marichi, who is one of the seven mind-born sons of Lord Brahma according to Hindu mythology. Marichi is known as the father of Surya, the Sun god, and is considered to be one of the great rishis, or seers, of ancient India. The pose is mentioned in the ancient yoga text, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, which describes it as a pose that brings stability to the body and mind. It is also included in the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga primary series, which was popularized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century.
